30., 31.07.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

From Philadelphia it is only a short distance to Baltimore. A friend advised me by e-mail to do a detour through the nearby „Amish Country“ Lancaster. Large farms are located along the route. Mainly corn is grown here. Street signs indicate to take care on horse-drawn carriages. Driving by, you can easily see which houses are owned by Amish people. Instead of gasoline-powered vehicles there are horse-drawn carriages in the garage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1 1\/2 days in Baltimore. Soon after my arrival I visit Edgar Allan Poe’s statue, home and grave. I walked. The house, where he lived is in an area with mostly town houses, rather lower social class. Poe’s house was saved from demolition from a club and does not fit within the environment. In one of the streets a juvenile is doing tricks on the rear wheel of his noisy motocross. A police officer sitting in his car at a corner does only give little attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One evening sitting in a pub I get in contact with a young PwC (PricewaterhouseCoopers) employee. He mainly is auditing companies. Two different characters meet. He tells me about his 60-70 hour week and his big salary. His first car was an Audi A4, a gift from his grandfather. Now he drives an A6. He only buys European cars, American cars are crap, as he says. He needs a couple beers to come down from work. Now and then he goes outside to smoking. I tell them that I quit my job and sold my car and other things and ride across America on a motorbike. We have a few beers and a chat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
